Dresden was called the “Pearl of Europe” and was like Venice one of the oldest and most beautiful and preserved cities full of irreplaceable art and architecture and Gutenberg libraries. All destroyed by the allied bombings with 722 heavy… bombers of the British Royal Air Force and 527 of the United States Army Air Forces ,under the command of the British general Sir Arthur Travers Harris knicknamed “ Bomber Butcher Harris “ Dresden was not a military target and not even the war industry was hit during the raid. It was a civilian target. To bring down the morale in Germany and the victims were all civilians. The bombing and the resulting firestorm destroyed more than 1,600 acres (6.5 km2) of the city centre.
An estimated 25,000 people were killed.
