About this artwork
I came to Berlin the first time in 1970 . I visited East Berlin and documented the fall off the Wall in 1989. I lived in a Kreuzberg factory for years and recently turned a former DDR office building into my art studio
I have a great fascination for Berlin, a city that has dominated the world as much as New York has. My grandmother lived there in the midst of the Weimar Republic, and my grandfather participated in the 1936 Berlin Olympic games.… A city full of pain and tears and still full of hope and dreams. A Survivor . I have also for many years been singing the repertoire of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Wiell, and created art to depict the German trauma and 20th century history. It's exiting to photograph a city full of so much history. The old surviving powerful totalitarian architecture from the dark past alongside the new fantastic cutting edge architecture off today. So after so many years in Berlin I feel can say “Ich bin ein Berliner “
