About this artwork
complex simplicity 4-9-19 is a large scale multiple head study on canvas in oils using a muted palette contrasting with areas of vibrant colour. Painted with a loose application of paint, ranging from thin glazes to thicker impasto. The multiple heads allure to our various personalities and moods and his interest in the presentation and concepts of beauty. We are exposed to countless images of manipulated perfection of the human form. This work is…
a counterbalance to this through the use of uneven surface textures and blotches of paint. Creating an awkward imperfect or flawed beauty.

« One cannot fully know or experience the reality of another person, and that this separateness underlies our daily consciousness »
Thomas Donaldson is an experienced painter based in Thailand who has exhibited his work throughout the UK and US. He first began to take art seriously as a teenager when he discovered the simultaneously shocking and seductive works of Egon Schiele and Francis Bacon, and hasn't looked back since. Today, Donaldson composes interpretations of the human figure, especially focusing on the impermanence, fragility and beauty within our fragmented culture and the people who navigate it. Expressive marks and stains give his compositions an aspect of vulnerability, leading to an overall sense of vitality.
