"A synesthetic rendering of the haunting call of the Koel in the woods at Berrima. Known colloquially as the ‘Stormbird’ in Australia, her call, a loud ascending whistle “KOO-EL”, invariably presages electrical storms". Tillian
Executed across three interrelated panels, 'Stormbird' presents a landscape in a state of convulsive vitality. The work embodies a deep engagement with the expressive potential of abstraction to convey emotional and mythological… realities. Across the triptych, one witnesses a rhythmic alternation between vegetal forms, soaring branches, and chromatic fields of energy, evoking not a static vista but a living, breathing environment.
In 'Stormbird' I invite viewers into an experience of landscape as a mythopoetic force — an active, sometimes tumultuous space where transformation, both personal and collective, becomes possible. The piece sits within the eco-poetic tradition in contemporary art where landscape is not passive backdrop but active participant

« I am an artist, pure and simple. I try to divide the cosmos with my hands. Happily, I speak to none, but everyone listens! »
Tillian is an award-winning artist based in Australia whose paintings have been featured in solo and group exhibitions nationally. He describes his artistic landscapes as visual narratives that trace passages in cyclical time and space. Through his works, Tillian explores themes related to anxiety, longing, and ecstatic recognition. In his artistic process, he favors using acrylics and gilding on wood. Tillian's practice bridges painting, mythopoetics, and ecological reflection. Deeply attuned to the natural and spiritual landscapes of the highland landscapes south of Sydney, Tillian often seeks to paint what resists depiction: the numinous, the mythic, the relational pulse between body and terrain. The artist synthesises elements of abstraction, post-symbolism, and visionary ecology to build a new visual lexicon of sacred land.
