About this artwork
In her series Unter-Tage, Tina Winkhaus opens a gateway into a labyrinthine underworld inhabited by bizarre figures and fractured realities. Fourteen large-scale works reveal scenes of raw intensity: a boy’s piercing gaze, a false Goethe suffocated by grandeur, a warrior woman among a disaffected tribe.
Recalling the drama of Renaissance and Baroque painting, Winkhaus orchestrates light, gesture, and texture with painterly precision. Shot in fragments… and assembled into non-linear perspectives, the images expand photography into a frozen cinematic experience.
Unter-Tage is both abyss and mirror—beauty colliding with violence, filth with opulence. It is a provocative unmasking of society, urging reflection and emancipation within the shadows.
Tina Winkhaus, trained in rigorous analogue photography in Munich and now based in Berlin, seamlessly merges classical craft, digital collage, and her pioneering Analog-AI™ method. She painstakingly constructs large-scale, painterly photographic mosaics from thousands of her own images, blending historical influences with contemporary innovation and dramatic, chiaroscuro lighting. Her art immerses viewers in the paradoxes of beauty and vulnerability, offering seductive surfaces that reveal hidden fragility and melancholy beneath constructed ideals.
