In Earth Odyssey, Tina Winkhaus crowns the monkey as both ruler and mirror of our age. Draped in plastic robes, riding zebras and horses, or playing cards in dystopian landscapes, the monkey becomes an allegory of the Anthropocene—an era defined by excess, greed, and environmental collapse.
Winkhaus draws on the traditions of Singerie painting and Old Master iconography, yet twists them into a critical narrative: when natural resources are gone,… only plastic remains, indestructible and omnipresent. Her monkeys embody both satire and warning—symbols of vanity, sin, and folly, but also of artistic creation and imitation.
Referencing art history from Caravaggio to Boccaccio, Winkhaus reimagines the monkey not only as “the most vile beast” but as an alter ego of the artist. In these staged photographic worlds, the monkey reflects back humanity’s destructive drive—asking who is truly the fool: the animal, or us.
Tina Winkhaus, trained in rigorous analogue photography in Munich and now based in Berlin, seamlessly merges classical craft, digital collage, and her pioneering Analog-AI™ method. She painstakingly constructs large-scale, painterly photographic mosaics from thousands of her own images, blending historical influences with contemporary innovation and dramatic, chiaroscuro lighting. Her art immerses viewers in the paradoxes of beauty and vulnerability, offering seductive surfaces that reveal hidden fragility and melancholy beneath constructed ideals.
