About this artwork
Bishop — “The calm before the check”
Chess Series
In this work, the figure embodies the strategic nature of the bishop: a silent presence that dominates not by force, but by precision. The direct, serene, and restrained gaze suggests calculation and spatial awareness; an intelligence that advances diagonally, avoiding frontal confrontation.
The restrained yet enveloping chromatic atmosphere reinforces the idea of introspection and control. The… gesture is not dramatic, but latent: a contained energy that anticipates movement.
Like on the chessboard, the bishop acts with subtlety: elegant, precise, and decisive when the game demands it. The work conveys a tense serenity where intelligence, concentration, and restrained confidence are palpable, generating a profound psychological connection with the viewer.
Tom Roy (Toni Ramírez, Vilanova i la Geltrú, Barcelona, 1976) is a painter of contemporary, direct and physical figurative language. She trained in business, marketing, market research, and art—an unusual combination that permeates her work. After studying at the Escola d'Art i Disseny in Tarragona, she specialized in contemporary techniques. Between 2011 and 2014, cancer led him to rethink his life and leave the commercial management of a multinational to dedicate himself completely to painting, until today. His work features monumental figures, oversized hands and feet, tense bodies, and contorted poses. He uses intense colors, decisive brushstrokes, and unconventional perspectives, currently favoring the use of almost dry oil paint. In 2025, he was selected as an Artist in Residence at World Art Dubai. He also participates in ART3F and FIABCN. His works convey energy, determination, and resilience, far removed from any naive optimism.
