About this artwork
In this oil painting, the body stands at the threshold between destruction and endurance.
One half of the figure remains illuminated in warm flesh tones, modeled with careful realism. The other half fractures into a cascade of fire, mineral texture, and shadow. The surface is not smooth. The flame is layered in pigment and mass, built with weight and intention. What appears to consume the figure is physically constructed from paint itself.
The… face tilts upward, suspended between surrender and resilience. The light does not flee the darkness; it coexists with it. The body becomes both altar and battleground.
This work reflects the moment when identity is split by experience, when something in us is irrevocably altered. Yet the stance remains upright. The structure remains intact.
The painting does not ask whether we burn.
It asks what part of us refuses to turn to ash.
Uchenna Obinabo-Mabazza, founder of the Mabazza Foundation, is a visual conceptual artist whose work bridges digital creation and classical craftsmanship. Working across mediums, he produces both original oil paintings developed in collaboration with traditional painters and fine-art prints derived from his digital compositions. Drawing from personal experience and universal themes, his art blends sculptural chiaroscuro with expressive color to explore resilience, identity, and healing. Through digital portraiture, hand-painted interpretations, and conceptual works, he creates emotionally resonant pieces marked by quiet intensity and reflective depth. Each piece invites viewers into a space of honesty and restoration, rooted in personal truth and a broader commitment to uplifting others. Through the Mabazza Foundation, his art supports cancer survivors and communities in need, transforming creative expression into a pathway for compassion and connection.
