About this artwork
I captured a scene at the Port of Hamburg here in oil on wood. It was high tide, but not dangerous. This kind of flooding is common in my city. Low-lying areas are submerged, but everyone is prepared. A man with a child in a bright yellow raincoat walked past me. I immediately felt the urge to paint it: so many bright yellow-orange lights on the harbor cranes and the shipyard perfectly complement the raincoat, surrounded by the gray-blue world of… the water and the stormy sky. I also noticed how the lights reflected off the wet pavement! The small oil painting is on a wooden panel, and the wood grain is still visible. The painting brings the essence of Hamburg and a breath of fresh air into any room.
« The process of color-sensitive, soft, slow painting contrasts with the speed and indifference of everyday life. I take part of my surroundings and make art out of it. »
The perception of Ulla Kutter's environment is shaped by the focus on disharmonious compositions and their aesthetics. The German painter portrays the broken, chaotic, and shining aspects of everyday life in the city. Through her images, she creates possibilities for different levels of perception. Kutter paints using the traditional techniques of old Dutch masters, using oils on canvas.
