About this artwork
Bharathanatyam is a classical dance form that has originated in Tamil Nadu, India. The word Bha-ra-tha-natyam combines 'Bhavam' meaning expression, 'raagam' meaning music, 'thalam' meaning rhythm and 'natyam' meaning dance. I had wanted to do a series on Bharathanatyam, to explore its grace and beauty through my brush.
What made it possible to give a tangible form to the idea, was a young dancer friend, who kindly consented to actually show me the… dance movements, in full dance costume and permitted me to take hundreds of photographs. The almost sculptural pauses that characterize the dance form are fleeting, haunting, compelling.
These photographs were then used as reference to create the series. I have remained authentic to the dance form as far as the poses are concerned. All the rest, including the faces of these dancers and the colors of the costumes etc. are purely imaginary.
