About this artwork
Spirits of the Amazigh is inspired by the strength and quiet pride of Amazigh women of North Africa, often referred to as the “free people.” The portrait reflects a sense of identity and heritage that endures through time -a beauty shaped not by adornment, but by belonging.
Fine facial tattoos appear as ancient symbols of protection and ancestry, linking the present to generations before. These markings become visual anchors, carrying memory, lineage,… and cultural continuity.
The unpolished, rough surface recalls a desert patina marked by sun, dust, and resilience. Through texture and restraint, the work conveys a dignity that does not seek attention -a grounded strength drawn from the earth itself, carried quietly and intact.
Vanessa Jongebloet is a self-taught contemporary painter who began her artistic journey with wood, stone, metal, and found objects, later training as a decorative painter and mastering fresco, trompe l’oeil, and other classical techniques. She merges material-driven experimentation with classical methods, building her pieces in expressive layers using oil, resin, ink, pigments, and mixed media, balancing realism with abstraction and a tactile focus on weathered, crackled surfaces. Her artworks radiate a profound sense of presence and quiet intensity, inviting viewers into contemplative spaces charged with memory, identity, and transformation.
