About this artwork
Spirits of Yellowstone explores the intertwined forces of creation, erosion, and transformation, reflecting a landscape where beauty and destruction coexist. Inspired by the geothermal terrain of Yellowstone, the work captures the dynamic meeting point of fire and water, where minerals continuously reshape the earth.
Layered pigments and textured surfaces echo these living forces. Sulphur yellows, rust tones, and deep mineral blues suggest movement… beneath the surface, as if the land itself remains in a state of ongoing formation.
The painting becomes a portrait of the earth’s own alchemy -a spirit emerging from heat, sediment, and time, shaped by constant change rather than permanence.
Vanessa Jongebloet is a self-taught contemporary painter who began her artistic journey with wood, stone, metal, and found objects, later training as a decorative painter and mastering fresco, trompe l’oeil, and other classical techniques. She merges material-driven experimentation with classical methods, building her pieces in expressive layers using oil, resin, ink, pigments, and mixed media, balancing realism with abstraction and a tactile focus on weathered, crackled surfaces. Her artworks radiate a profound sense of presence and quiet intensity, inviting viewers into contemplative spaces charged with memory, identity, and transformation.
