The word "encaustic" comes from the… Greek word enkaustikos, meaning "to burn" or "to heat." The wax, usually purified beeswax, is mixed with colored pigments. To make the mixture workable and fluid, it must be heated and maintained at a high temperature, with the addition of resins such as dammar to harden the wax and improve its durability.
