About this artwork
The overheated lagoon is presented as a diptych; here, the secondary piece, two of two. I wanted to symbolize the ambivalence that overwhelms the diver when swimming in the lagoon, especially in Reunion. Ambivalence, since beyond the natural beauty of the sea, its fragility is increasingly evident. Of course, we still find life there, and fortunately so! But anyone who has been swimming there for decades can attest to the change. Beauty is becoming… more discreet. The few remaining colorful corals dazzle the observer's eyes, but are now too rare.
Victor Abel, a Canadian artist living in Réunion Island, explores the relationship between material, gesture, and light. His work, rooted in research on colors, shapes, and contrasts, is characterized in particular by the use of metal supports and gold leaf gilding. Through his works, he questions the viewer's perception, playing on the effects of depth and movement.
Trained in both traditional techniques and contemporary approaches, he makes his own paints from natural pigments and experiments with processes to bring to life compositions where abstraction dialogues with symbols.
Alongside his creative work, he designs site-specific performances and installations, placing his art in atypical spaces. He also invests in the transmission of knowledge by offering training courses and workshops aimed at different audiences, from young creators to established artists.
