About this artwork
This painting stands out in the "Studio Floor" series for its figurative elements. Whales come to Reunion Island to mate during the southern winter. From the balcony of my studio overlooking the sea, I can observe these immense cetaceans in the distance through the fishing boats, but also, further away, the ocean liners loaded with hundreds of containers. This superposition inspired the title in reference, on the one hand to Herman Melville's work… "Moby-Dick", but also to our dependence on the mobility of our consumer goods. This also inspired the following poem:
It's clumsy, disproportionately heavy! Who could truly live without it? Those who own it can't get rid of it. Those who don't have it hope for it.
But this privilege of mobility doesn't come without its challenges. Often, more than a ton of steel is needed to move 70 to 90 kilograms. We're talking efficiency! A good vehicle that exacerbates all sensitivities...
Victor Abel, a Canadian artist living in Réunion Island, explores the relationship between material, gesture, and light. His work, rooted in research on colors, shapes, and contrasts, is characterized in particular by the use of metal supports and gold leaf gilding. Through his works, he questions the viewer's perception, playing on the effects of depth and movement.
Trained in both traditional techniques and contemporary approaches, he makes his own paints from natural pigments and experiments with processes to bring to life compositions where abstraction dialogues with symbols.
Alongside his creative work, he designs site-specific performances and installations, placing his art in atypical spaces. He also invests in the transmission of knowledge by offering training courses and workshops aimed at different audiences, from young creators to established artists.
