Great Grasshopper:
For the "WALDband" project, I created five bronze sculptures of regionally occurring insects from our gardens. They have been on display at the Lüdinghausen Biological Center since 2022. The challenging task of creating these sculptures was accomplished with the help of original specimens from the LWL Museum of Natural History in Münster, as well as various photos and videos. In addition, I received expert advice from a biologist… at the Lüdinghausen Biological Center. The great green bush-cricket is a beneficial predator, as it hunts other, harmful insects. The males produce high-pitched chirping sounds with a shrill chorus of their long wings.
Waltraud Hustermeier is a trained wood sculptor with a degree in visual communication. Today, she primarily works as a stone restorer, creating figurative additions mainly in stone substitute material. With masterful technique, she models animals in clay, capturing lightness, movement, and elegance through intricate details and vividly and realistically expressing the unique characteristics of each species. Her works, cast in bronze, are deeply moving, immortalizing the wonderful forms and patterns of nature by playfully exploring contrasts such as softness and hardness, thus evoking wonder and admiration.
