About this artwork
The lapwing is a pigeon-sized bird and, because it is considered an endangered species, was Bird of the Year in 1996. It has large eyes and a long, double-pointed crest on its head. This delicate crest is difficult to depict in bronze because the solid metal can easily be mistaken for antlers.

- Works on commission
Waltraud Hustermeier is a trained wood sculptor with a degree in visual communication. Today, she primarily works as a stone restorer, creating figurative additions mainly in stone substitute material. With masterful technique, she models animals in clay, capturing lightness, movement, and elegance through intricate details and vividly and realistically expressing the unique characteristics of each species. Her works, cast in bronze, are deeply moving, immortalizing the wonderful forms and patterns of nature by playfully exploring contrasts such as softness and hardness, thus evoking wonder and admiration.
