About this artwork
Set Me Free was created during a time when I felt emotionally suppressed with my daily paid job but had to keep going. The dark, layered background represents that weight — the feeling of being contained beneath silence. The bold orange marks are my attempt to push through that space to find a way forward. The gestures are instinctive and unpolished, embodying resistance rather than perfection. Freedom here is not calm or serene; it is loud, disruptive.… This painting is both a confrontation and a declaration — a refusal to remain contained. I left that job soon after, but can still feel that tension in my heart of that time.
Wendy Grace holds an Honours degree in Painting from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. An accomplished Australian artist renowned for her vibrant abstract compositions, command of colour and instinctive grasp of spatial relationships. Her artworks are deeply influenced by nature and urban dynamics, as she seeks to push the boundaries of her work to find new ways to convey meaning and emotion. She says of Abstract painting that, “she is able to use everyday experiences and encounters with people and the environment in her work, to create a space to explore pathways to the imaginary,” offering the viewer a dynamic interplay of colour and pattern.
