About this artwork
This richly textured painting—with thick impasto strokes in muted lilac, gold, lavender, and subtle greens—evokes a strong, layered emotional response. The paint seems to rise and ripple off the surface, creating a sculptural quality that is both deeply tactile and visually dynamic. The predominant lavender and soft white tones create a calming, meditative effect. But the gold highlights and textured depth introduce subtle liveliness—suggesting energy… beneath serenity. The overall mood is one of poised reflection, yet alive with depth
The visible knifework and layering echo my hand and intent. I wanted to create a map of emotion, relaxed in places, bold in others, an expressive gesture captured in thick paint.
In my composition, there is a quiet serenity intertwined with subtle vitality. The lavender hues soothe, while the gold-infused strokes energize. I imagined a contemplative garden at dawn, soft and dreamy, yet buzzing with life.
« Art is an adventure full of mystery, frustration and profound joy. I am continuously torn between despair and elation. »
Wietzie’s abstract work is part of the Expressionist movement. She currently lives and works in France.
Her work explores the meeting place between memory and landscape, where form dissolves into colour and texture becomes a language of its own. Inspired by the shifting light and organic rhythms of nature, she paints not to replicate a scene, but to evoke its essence—the way it feels rather than how it looks.
Through layered brushwork and a palette that moves between tranquil blues, luminous aquas, and blossoming pinks, reds, oranges, she creates spaces that hover between abstraction and impression. Each painting is an invitation to wander—a place where boundaries blur, light filters softly through imagined foliage, and colour drifts like petals on water.
She works in dialogue with texture, letting impasto strokes catch and scatter the light, so that the surface of the canvas mirrors the layered complexity of the natural world.
