About this artwork
I painted this after a walk through Weston Turville, where a dense hedge cut across the fields like a quiet barrier. It was dark and unreadable, full of birdsong but giving nothing away. On either side the land opened into sunlight, yet the hedge held its own mood.
That contrast between the open fields and the hidden life inside was what drew me in. The birds were loud but unseen, and the stillness outside only made the space feel larger. I kept… the hedge almost as a silhouette, using strong contrasts of red-brown and green to hold that sense of separation, with a calm sky settling above it.
It is a simple subject, but it carries a mix of curiosity and quiet unease that you only notice when you stop long enough to look.
Wolfango Chiappella is an Italian-born painter based in Buckinghamshire, UK. Raised in the Piedmont countryside, his work is shaped by a lifelong familiarity with rural landscapes and the quiet edges of towns. He paints primarily in oil on panel or canvas, using restrained colour, softened forms, and an emphasis on atmosphere.
His paintings often begin with real places, fields, paths, waterways, or overlooked corners, but shift in the studio towards simplified, pared-back compositions. Rather than describing a location, his work focuses on stillness, distance, and the weight of light and weather. Drawing on landscapes from both Italy and England, his paintings sit between observation and memory, offering calm, reflective spaces that feel held rather than explained.
