About this artwork
Taken in the Ligurian hinterland, I used plastic wrap to create this photograph in the darkroom. I placed the wrap over the photographic paper and, much like sculpting, gently shifted it bit by bit to shape the form. After exposure, I used a Chinese brush to develop specific areas, outlining the final form. I chose Saint paper, which has a slightly warm tone; the entire process was truly delightful.

Yan Wang blends photography, darkroom processes, and traditional Chinese painting, drawing from his early training in Chinese art and international studies. He innovatively merges Eastern aesthetics and Western techniques, using brushwork to deconstruct and transform photographic images, often employing black-and-white darkroom methods and exploring various media like glass and canvas. His painterly, surreal, and poetic works evoke a sense of nostalgia, reverence, and longing, serving as a tribute to his teacher and synthesizing worlds, memories, and cultural emotion.
