About this artwork
The original version of this photograph depicts the walls of an ancient building in an old village in Tonglu, Hangzhou, China. I isolated the sharp, textured images of the ancient walls and roof tiles from the original negative and transformed them into a visual effect of water and ink, expressing how time passes and memories of the past scatter and fade away like water and bubbles.

Yan Wang blends photography, darkroom processes, and traditional Chinese painting, drawing from his early training in Chinese art and international studies. He innovatively merges Eastern aesthetics and Western techniques, using brushwork to deconstruct and transform photographic images, often employing black-and-white darkroom methods and exploring various media like glass and canvas. His painterly, surreal, and poetic works evoke a sense of nostalgia, reverence, and longing, serving as a tribute to his teacher and synthesizing worlds, memories, and cultural emotion.
