Elegua - Orishas Collection
In 1999, on a journey from Madrid to Ecuador, an unexpected stop in La Habana for a printing festival introduced me to the mystical world of Santería. The Orishas, rooted in the Yoruba religion and brought to Cuba through the history of slavery, survived Catholic colonisation by aligning with saints. In Cuban Santería, individuals form deep connections with their patron Orishas, praying, offering, and honouring them in… ceremonies of love and protection.
Elegua is known as the master of the crossroads, doors, and beginnings. He controls fate and destiny and acts as the divine messenger between humans and the spirit realm. He is often portrayed as a complex, dual-natured trickster.
In the collection, I sculpted Chango and Elewa to capture this spiritual connection, portraying strength, love, and protection. I hope these works invite admiration while inspiring reflection on the power of human resilience when keeping their roots alive.
