In 1999, on a journey from Madrid to Ecuador, an unexpected stop in La Habana for a printing festival introduced me to the mystical world of Santería. The Orishas, rooted in the Yoruba religion and brought to Cuba through the history of slavery, survived Catholic colonisation by aligning with saints. In Cuban Santería, individuals form deep connections with their patron Orishas, praying, offering, and honouring them in… ceremonies of love and protection.
Chango, a central Orisha, embodies thunder, justice, and virility. He embodies charismatic leadership, immense strength, and righteous anger against injustice. Chango represents the raw, passionate, and volatile forces of nature.
In the collection, I sculpt Oshun, Chango, and Elewa to capture this spiritual connection, portraying strength, love, and protection. I hope these works invite admiration while inspiring reflection on the balance we must maintain as spiritual beings in a changing world.
Yanire Sylva Delgado is an Ecuadorian artist and printmaker based in London, who works with printmaking, ceramics, metal, and timber, drawing from her training in Madrid and academic background in the arts. Her techniques are experimental and passionate, integrating vibrant colour, tactile texture, and archaeological motifs inspired by her South American roots, enriched with seals evoking ancient cultures. Through her dynamic sculptures and prints, she channels themes of resilience, evolution, and the complexities of human emotion, inviting viewers into a transformative experience filled with vitality, introspection, and hope.
'Experimental and passionate are the words that come to mind when describing my work. I have always been drawn to archaeological artefacts—their use, function, and aesthetic appeal. I am captivated by their grounding, raw quality, and the imperfections that make them unmistakably human-made'
