Throughout art history, birds have appeared from illuminated manuscripts to Audubon's detailed studies. Post-1950, this theme took on new complexity, often addressing environmental concerns or mass production. Andy Warhol worked extensively with the motif, notably producing a series of hand-coloured prints in the 1950s that later became famous. The world-famous photographer Eliot Porter revolutionized color nature photography, dedicating his career to capturing birds and their environments with vivid, precise detail, most notably in his work on conservation.
