Bird watching - curated by Flavio Scaloni

A curation by Flavio Scaloni, Gallery Manager at Galerie Lo Scalo - The theme of Birds is an inexhaustible source of inspiration, embodying freedom, the spirit of transcendence, and the fragile beauty of nature. Birds have served as messengers between earthly and spiritual realms, symbolizing hope, peace (the dove), and the soul's flight. Psychologically, they represent lightness, aspiration, and the ability to rise above worldly concerns. Throughout art history, birds have appeared from illuminated manuscripts to Audubon's detailed studies. Post-1950, this theme took on new complexity, often addressing environmental concerns or mass production. Andy Warhol worked extensively with the motif, notably producing a series of hand-coloured prints in the 1950s that later became famous. The world-famous photographer Eliot Porter revolutionized color nature photography, dedicating his career to capturing birds and their environments with vivid, precise detail, most notably in his work on conservation. This collection celebrates the enduring, multifaceted symbolism and visual poetry of the avian world.
