A curation by Natalie Slater, Curator at Singulart - Marc Laffolay’s Au-delà des grilles and Tentatives d’écriture series share an interest in structure, repetition, and the freedom to disrupt both. Grids, lines, and repeated marks organize the canvas, while color and gesture continually push against that order.
In Au-delà des grilles, the grid becomes a framework for movement, overtaken by small bursts of color that give the paintings an almost musical rhythm. In Tentatives d’écriture, Laffolay turns toward a more instinctive form of mark-making. His lines gather across scraped and sanded surfaces like an invented script, somewhere between writing and drawing.
In both series, structure gives Laffolay something to push against. Order is there, but so is the possibility of breaking free from it.
