Orchids - curated by Flavio Scaloni

A curation by Flavio Scaloni, Gallery Manager at Galerie Lo Scalo - The orchid is a profound artistic muse, representing exotic beauty, fertility, and the delicate balance between fragility and resilience. Symbolically, it is associated with luxury, refinement, and sexuality, carrying psychological connotations of elegance and enigmatic desire. Since 1950, the orchid has been reinterpreted through various lenses. Salvador Dalí explored its surreal qualities in his "Flora Dalinae" series (1968), while contemporary artist Marc Quinn captures the flower's hyper-real allure in his "The Evolution of Desire" sculptures, where the orchid signifies the complex artifice of nature. In photography, the world-famous Robert Mapplethorpe provided the definitive modern study of the flower; his work "Orchid" (1986) emphasizes the subject's sculptural perfection and raw, erotic undertones. This selection showcases how contemporary artists find inspiration in the orchid's intricate architecture and its power to bridge the natural and the symbolic worlds.
