A curation by Flavio Scaloni, Gallery Manager at Galerie Lo Scalo - The theme of Surf is a powerful icon of the American Dream, embodying the tension between freedom and the raw, unpredictable force of nature. It emerged post-1950, tied to California's youth culture, symbolizing rebellion, the eternal search for the perfect wave (Zen moment), and a psychological desire for flow and balance. The theme is synonymous with the "Endless Summer" ideal.
In contemporary art, "Surf" is deeply rooted in this cultural history. The American surf boom was immortalized in music by The Beach Boys and in cult films like Big Wednesday (1978). While many artists have captured the scene, the Scottish painter Peter Doig evokes the existential solitude of the figure in water with works like Surfer (2001), blending personal memory with cinematic imagery. The world-famous photographer Leroy Grannis, widely considered the "godfather of surf photography," created the definitive visual record of the sport's golden age, capturing the athleticism and spirit of Southern California's iconic coastline. This collection celebrates the exhilaration, risk, and enduring visual poetry found in the "Surf Moment."
