Train journey - curated by Flavio Scaloni

A curation by Flavio Scaloni, Gallery Manager at Galerie Lo Scalo - Trains are powerful symbols in art, embodying themes of progress, technology, and the dramatic acceleration of modern life. They represent a journey, both physical and metaphorical, suggesting transition, escape, and the passage of time. The train's rhythm and movement have a profound psychological effect, evoking feelings of excitement, anticipation, or a sense of melancholy as landscapes blur past a window. The steam, steel, and speed of trains also symbolize the raw power and ambition of the Industrial Age. Throughout art history, trains have been a central motif, particularly in the 19th and 20th centuries. The Impressionists, such as Claude Monet, were fascinated by the floating effects of light and steam, dedicating a series of works to the Gare Saint-Lazare station. In the 20th century, the Futurists celebrated the dynamism of trains, seeing them as a prime example of speed and mechanical beauty in works like Umberto Boccioni's The City Rises, which captures a bustling construction scene with a train in the background. The American realist Edward Hopper captured the poignant solitude of train journeys and waiting rooms, as seen in his painting Compartment Car, 1938.
