“Ice Structures” is a large-format textile work that unfolds a calm, almost meditative presence through its reduced formal language and its precise, handcrafted execution.
The surface is created through an elaborate hand-smocking and quilting process, in which the fabric compacts into a dense, relief-like structure. This results in a finely rhythmic field of raised and recessed areas, reminiscent of crystalline formations, icy landscapes, or ordered… natural processes.
The monochrome color scheme emphasizes the clarity of the composition and draws attention to light, shadow, and structure. Depending on the angle of the light, the perception of the surface changes, making the work appear vibrant.
“Ice Structures” exists at the intersection of textile art, minimal art, and object art. The work impresses with its focus, its material quality, and its timeless, minimalist aesthetic.
Anke Pradel-Schönknecht uses textile materials as well as painting, collage, and mixed media – her creative path led her from classical painting through studies in textile and surface design to experimental textile art. With sophisticated techniques such as dyeing, printing, sewing, and layering diverse materials, she creates three-dimensional relief images and art quilts that combine tactile and visual stimuli. Her artworks convey curiosity, sensuality, and a captivating depth; they invite viewers to understand structures not only visually but also emotionally.
