Deze foto komt uit de inmiddels beroemde serie Grachtenhuizen over de stadspaleizen van Amsterdam. Trip House is surely one of the most regal of all the palatial houses ever built in Amsterdam. Justus Vingboons (c. 1620-98) designed the house. The façade is copiously decorated with references to the arms trade: the family emblem on the pediment is flanked by cannons and on the roof, the four enormous chimneys are in the shape of mortars. The Trips… commissioned leading artists such as Ferdinand Bol and Allard van Everdingen. On the walls hung portraits by Rembrandt. Trip House remained the Trip family residence until the early 19th century. In 1812, it was put to an entirely different use when King Louis Bonaparte set up the Royal Institute of Science, Literature and Fine Arts there. Between 1815 and 1885, it was also home to the Rijksmuseum.
