About this artwork
Very little is known of its origin, method of creation, or cultural significance.
Some authors suspect that it would be the Mother Earth of the European culture of the Upper Paleolithic, due to the fact that numerous evidence and figurines of the same type have been found, distributed indiscriminately throughout different territories where the Upper Paleolithic developed. It has been suggested that his corpulence would represent a high social status… in a hunter-gatherer society and that, in addition to the obvious reference to fertility, the image could also be a symbol of security, success or well-being.[citation needed]
The statue's feet are not carved, so it cannot stand on its own. For that reason, it is believed that it was used to also be moved, since that society was nomadic. Due to the few belongings and possessions of the Paleolithic, it is assumed that it had great importance within these societies.
