About this artwork
"Fallen Angel" is a last judgement or damnation themed piece, a vision of Hell, if you will. This subject was more commonly found in Medieval Christian art. The most famous of this genre is Michelangelo's High Renaissance, "Last Judgement" on the back wall of the Sistine Chapel. This piece is essentially a drawing colored with paint. The tangled figures piled atop one another push against each other exerting pressure that begins to transform or… abstract some of the struggling figures. The figures come to represent a microcosm of the human condition displaying chaos, exploitation and victimization as well as signs of tenderness and helpfulness in the common predicament. A hint of sky, possibly a way out, appears along the top edge.
The art is framed with a wood frame, painted with a gold-leaf like finish with non-glare plexiglass (soft reflections are visible in the close-up photos.)

Bruce Rauffenbart is a New York artist who studied painting in Philadelphia, Provincetown and Rome, He is an adept figure draughtsman but his painting is mainly abstract. Rauffenbart draws inspiration from the many resources in New York City including the growing gallery scene in his Tribeca neighborhood. His continued travels to Rome, Naples and Sicily have deepened his interest in classical mythology and art history. His painting reimagines these classical sources with inventive, transformative processes radiating an emotional intensity—evoking the primal, passionate, and poetic—expressing the grandeur and vulnerability inherent in myth while also evoking something of our own time.
