The sculpture "Cathedral" is a study of space within space. Several arched layers lie protectively over a massive core, creating an impressive sculptural density.
Materiality: The cedar wood used is striking due to its characteristic, vibrant grain and warm color. Cedar is also known for its delicate, aromatic fragrance, which adds an extra, sensual dimension to the sculpture.
Architectural form: The title says it all – the wide arches are reminiscent… of Gothic vaults or protective domes. The sculpture appears stable and grounded, while the spaces between guide the eye inwards and play with light and shadow.
Craftsmanship: The roughly cut edges interact with the natural curvature of the wood, creating a tension between the strength of the solid trunk and the elegance of the curved line.

CW Loth is a sculptor from Westphalia who completed his artistic training at the Ottersberg University of Applied Sciences and has been working with wood for decades. His technique involves transforming massive blocks of wood into complex, dynamic sculptures using a chainsaw, essentially folding the inside out – everything is created from a single piece. His constructivist-concrete style and precise carving create imaginary movements in space. Loth's sculptures convey a quiet tension and lead the viewer to a profound experience of space, potential, and inner movement.
