Dynamics and form: The sculpture, standing 93 cm tall, gracefully reaches for the vertical. Its distinctive feature is the opening that gives it its name: the trunk has been so precisely divided and guided that a large, oval void is created, lending the work an extraordinary lightness.
Materiality: The linden wood displays a warm, even tone. The precise surface finishing accentuates the gentle curves and the almost organic silhouette of the stele.…
Effect: The work plays with the contrast between the stability of the base and the dynamic, almost weightless arc in the middle section. It is a study in the overcoming of matter through space.
CW Loth is a sculptor from Westphalia who completed his artistic training at the Ottersberg University of Applied Sciences and has been working with wood for decades. His technique involves transforming massive blocks of wood into complex, dynamic sculptures using a chainsaw, essentially folding the inside out – everything is created from a single piece. His constructivist-concrete style and precise carving create imaginary movements in space. Loth's sculptures convey a quiet tension and lead the viewer to a profound experience of space, potential, and inner movement.
