About this artwork
If you have ever suffered from Insomnia, you may sympathize with the woman in this collage. The classically beautiful constellations become threatening waking nightmares. The dream of blissful sleep seems unattainable.
This collage is made of images from 17th and 18th century celestial charts, combined with images from art history, laser-printed on archival paper, hand-cut and glued with acrylic gel to non-acidic board. I used colored pencil to… highlight various areas. The work is contained in a wooden frame, painted to match the colors in the artwork. I chose not to mat this work, as I wanted it to feel claustrophobic. Spacers are used to keep the glass off the surface of the work.
Diane Keane is a mixed-media artist and painter with roots in Pittsburgh and a background spanning commercial art, papermaking, calligraphy, and medical illustration. She crafts assemblage boxes reminiscent of shrines or curiosity cabinets from found or fabricated objects, balancing realism and surrealism in her paintings to conjure extraordinary realities. Her work weaves personal narratives and social commentary, infusing irony amid themes of motherhood, womanhood, and environmental decline. Above all, her art beckons the viewer into mysterious, atmospheric worlds, sparking emotions that range from pleasure and intrigue to thoughtful discomfort and wonder.
