About this artwork
Madrid became the capital of Spain in 1562. Its early history is alluded to in this painting through the collaged text of an ancient Celtiberian plaque, and it was known under Roman rule as Ursalia, ‘Land of the Bears’. The bear was later adopted as the emblem of Madrid, which depicts it searching for fruit on a strawberry tree, a common species in the region; it is sculpted in a striking statue at the Gate of the Sun (Puerta del Sol) in the city… centre. The bear and the strawberry tree take pride of place in this painting, with the Gate of the Sun in the top right. Madrid’s Christian history is referred to in the image of Saint Isidro, the city’s patron saint, and in counterpoint, its Islamic past is suggested by Emir Muhammad I, the Muslim founder of the city then named Majrit, in the 9th century. Madrid is the only capital city of Islamic origin in Europe.
Elizabeth Drayson, a painter with a scholarly background in medieval Spanish culture and a Diploma in Oil Painting, works in oil and mixed media to intertwine the visual and written histories of Europe and Spain. She draws from both medieval traditions and modern abstraction, using bold colors, dramatic compositions, metallic spray paint, collage, and evocative textures to reinterpret historical portraits and landscapes. Her art seeks to uncover the essential nature of people and places, conveying a rich tapestry of intertwined identities and powerful aspirations for reconciliation, respect, and understanding through history brought vibrantly into the present.
