About this artwork
This painting explores the idea of home as something shaped through memory, return, and lived experience rather than a single place. It draws on familiar paths and landscapes connected to personal history, where the land remains constant as the self and seasons change.
Rooted in the idea of hiraeth, it reflects a deep longing for the deeply known, a place holding layers of reflection, grief, and joy. The Malvern Hills, for the artist, offer space… both to remember and to renew.
The work is not an exact view, but an evocation of atmosphere and familiarity. Marble dust mixed into a soft pink ground creates texture and slows the paint, allowing clouds to move more naturally. Influenced by Turner, the painting forms part of an ongoing study of light, sky, and presence within the landscape.
Francesca Currie is a classically trained oil painter based in the UK, with a background rooted in the sight-size method and a BA (Hons) in Fine Art, furthered at LARA. She blends Old Master traditions with expressive, contemporary techniques—her alla prima method and bold use of light imbue landscapes with both lively immediacy and subtle atmosphere. Her works evoke a sense of calm, optimism, and wonder, inviting viewers to pause, reflect, and find beauty and resonance in fleeting moments of the natural world.
