About this artwork
I collect the seaweed used in my work along the Cumbrian coastline in the western Lake District National Park. Walking the shoreline after the tide has gone out is one of my favourite places to be. The sea leaves behind the most beautiful seaweed of all shapes and colours, washed gently onto the shore.
Each piece is carefully gathered and taken home to be pressed. Seaweed presses surprisingly well and reveals intricate natural patterns that often… go unnoticed when it is still in the water. This triptych is of oak leaf seaweed and you can see why!
After several weeks in the press the seaweed becomes delicate, translucent and in this case develops a autumnal hue. This simple composition allows the natural structure and movement of the seaweed to be seen clearly.
Every piece captures a small part of the Cumbrian coast and preserves it long after the tide has returned.
Janet Nuttall, a self-taught artist with a background in art history and gallery curation, creates pressed-flower artworks using plants and seaweed from her organic garden and nearby landscapes. She employs intuitive, biophilic design techniques, arranging each element with gentle delicacy to emphasize the intricate beauty and structures found in nature. Her art invites viewers to pause, reflect, and truly notice the fleeting marvels of the natural world, encouraging a sense of wonder and appreciation for life's delicate moments.
