About this artwork
Eve In this painting Eve is holding an apple to her chin while gazing at a pomegranate in her other hand. She is contemplating the story that's been told. The forbidden fruit in the bible was never an apple. It became an apple in Milton's poem, Paradise Lost.
Most scholars suggest it was actually a pomegranate, a plant indigenous to biblical lands. This painting begs the question, "What is propaganda versus what is the truth?"
Was Eve the originator… of all man's sins, the evil temptress, or was that a convenient cover story to condemn her to servitude to her husband?
Certainly, this was not a story told to empower women. Which begs the question, what was it told for, by who, and for whose purpose?
Artist Statement
This body of work is about female empowerment, either protesting the roles that bind women, or fully claiming them. In this body of work, I pose the question Is this how the Patriarch sees me? I also pose an opposite question: Is this how I see myself?
