About this artwork
Rooted explores the deep connection between humanity and the natural world. I created this piece as a reflection on belonging, the idea that we are not separate from nature, but intrinsically part of it.
The figure flows seamlessly into the surrounding forms, her presence intertwined with roots, branches and organic movement. Rather than standing apart from the landscape, she exists within it, embodying grounding, continuity and quiet strength.… The relationship between figure and environment is one of unity rather than contrast.
Carved into live-edge Spalted Birch, the natural contours and spalting lines echo the rhythms of growth found in trees and root systems. Burnt and carved marks introduce depth and warmth, reinforcing the elemental quality of the work while allowing the material to guide the composition.
This piece serves as a reminder of our relationship to the earth, a calm, enduring bond rooted in nature, balance and presence.
