About this artwork
In Silent Tension, I explore the quiet force of unspoken emotions and the layered complexity of female identity. The fragmented face—split across bold green lines—represents the inner fractures we carry yet continue to conceal. I used raw materials such as burlap, fabric, sand, and thread to create a textured surface that feels both intimate and unsettling.
The black thread that winds across the canvas and spills beyond its edges is like a thought… that refuses to stay silent—a trace of memory, resistance, or vulnerability. It moves like hair, like a scar, like a voice that’s been held back for too long.
This piece reflects my ongoing interest in portraying psychological landscapes—where silence becomes a space of meaning, tension, and strength. Through Silent Tension, I wanted to give form to the invisible threads that tie our identities together, especially as women navigating truth, perception, and presence.

M. Kara (formerly Müberra Karamanoğlu, also spelled Muberra Karamanoglu) is a Turkish-born artist working between New York and Ankara.Her work centers on layered portraiture, where the figure is treated as a surface—cut, veiled, and transformed through material.
Using burlap, rope, thread, tulle, and fabric collage, Kara builds compositions that shift and interrupt the image. Rooted in personal memory and textile traditions of the Black Sea region, these materials carry both physical and emotional weight.
