This image was taken in Bayreuth and, for me, belongs to the cosmos of "When Stones Speak." I'm interested in the play of light, which organizes the space as if with an invisible hand: It gropes across the floor, reaches up to the pillars, and draws the sequence of arches into the depths. This creates a calm rhythm of light and dark that guides the gaze without being intrusive.
I work with reduced tonal values and a narrow focus to reveal the porosity… of the masonry: coarse aggregates, open joints, worn edges. Each surface responds differently to the light—rough, matte, shimmering—and makes the grotto's materiality legible.
The repetition of the arcades, slight offsets, and shadow edges create a spatial effect that fluctuates between passage and retreat. The focus is not on the ornament, but on the relationship between form, material, and light—a silent conversation in which the stone briefly becomes audible.
Marcel van Beek works with photography, painting, and graphic design, drawing on his artistic background from his studies at the Alanus University of Art and Social Sciences. His technique combines pictorialist influences with romantic-symbolist imagery. His photographs embody contemporary fine art photography and conceptual photography, often featuring monochrome recolors in tertiary colors.
He creates a poetic visual language interested in forms and structures, combining this with a modern, conceptual approach that claims social relevance. In his works, he explores inner and outer landscapes, conveying feelings of longing and threat, as well as a fascination with the hidden. He has published various art publications (most recently "World of Water," 2025), which are represented internationally in academy and museum libraries (including Vienna, Basel, Düsseldorf, and Berlin).
