About this artwork
"Silent Hill 01" takes my "foggy hours" to an island hill that emerges from the haze like a world of its own. A slender power pole holds lines in the air, as if someone had wanted to bind the gray. The rusty red isn't an effect for the sake of effect; it's the temperature of the moment—damp, metallic, a hint of iron in the throat. I don't erase the fog, but expose it: contours we sense; technology as a solitary figure. The impression is reminiscent…
of the oppressive scenario in the film Silent Hill: a seemingly abandoned order that nevertheless continues to have an effect. And at the same time, I remain in reality: wind on my skin, wires that sing softly, an echo from the horizon. Thus, a pole above bushes becomes a little ballad about the present and unrest—romantic in tone, true in appearance, an image that quietly asks what will still happen or remain here once the fog clears and the scenery returns to itself.

Marcel van Beek works with photography, painting, and graphic design, drawing on his artistic background from his studies at the Alanus University of Art and Social Sciences. His technique combines pictorialist influences with romantic-symbolist imagery. His photographs embody contemporary fine art photography and conceptual photography, often featuring monochrome recolors in tertiary colors.
He creates a poetic visual language interested in forms and structures, combining this with a modern, conceptual approach that claims social relevance. In his works, he explores inner and outer landscapes, conveying feelings of longing and threat, as well as a fascination with the hidden. He has published various art publications (most recently "World of Water," 2025), which are represented internationally in academy and museum libraries (including Vienna, Basel, Düsseldorf, and Berlin).
