In my universe of Masks, a young woman and a child. Raised on the head, the mask is a theatrical double: a second smile looking upward, coexisting with the unveiled face. Two simultaneous presences, free from any hierarchy. I wanted to enclose the pair of characters in a single bubble with features and gestures, in an embrace that is also symbolic. I wanted an intimate and familiar painting, like a motherhood, to fit into my metaphysical play of… possible meanings, but I like, as usual, for meanings and values to be in the eye of the beholder, or simply in the most immediate meaning.
This work is also on silk, then mounted on a wooden stretcher for framing. My pastel technique plays with the silkiness of the support using ancient fabric treatment techniques.
Marianna De Leoni, born in Rome and with a solid background in set design, has worked as a set and costume designer with major directors in Italy and abroad. Her imaginative world often draws on narrative, using pastels on silk and fine paper, oil, mixed media, textural art, and digital art, blending classical roots with theatricality. Her technical exploration and ongoing research are grounded in rigorous, technical certainty. Her works explore the concept of the "double" of the person, the mask, myth, and the sacred in a figurative style suspended between dream and metaphysics, animated by a joyful and powerful line. Her creations convey a visionary force, inviting each viewer to find their own meaning in a narrative that is always alive and personal.
