About this artwork
I was repairing my push bike on a beautiful sunny day, listening to the radio, when the news came through that a humpback whale and her calf had stranded about 200 kilometers (120 miles) to the north, near the top of the North Island of New Zealand. I grabbed my gear and drove to the rough west coast beach, arriving in the early evening.
Rangers and volunteers were already losing hope. I stayed the night on the beach, reflecting on the remarkable… yet heartbreaking scene. At first light, I took this image of a man who seemed to mirror my own state of mind.
A few hours later, the whale and her calf were euthanized and buried on the beach by members of the local iwi. It was a sad day, but I am grateful I was there to witness and document it. People will not protect what they cannot see.
