About this artwork
"There is nothing perfect under the sun, and it would be foolish to claim that there is."
Lou Andreas-Salomé
Lou was ahead of her time. A writer, psychoanalyst, philosopher—and always free.
She lived relationships in her own way, for example as a lover of Rilke and Nietzsche, questioned conventions, wrote about what many did not dare to feel.
In my portrait, I combine her thinking with her inner independence: calm, clear, incorruptible.
It… all began with her. I absolutely wanted to make a portrait of her. Such an impressive woman from a time when emancipation was anything but a given. I tried to capture her strength, her mystery, and her independence in the picture. That's why, in addition to printmaking, I also worked extensively with spray cans.
Michaela Kuhl is a painter who works primarily in watercolor and oil techniques. She is a survivor of the 2004 tsunami, incorporating her experiences into her artistic development. She uses layered painting techniques that symbolize transformation and growth, as well as poetic titles to open up access to the depth of her paintings. Her works convey courage, hope, and the power to draw personal growth and strength from challenges—especially for women.
