About this artwork
This pastel sketch was created as part of a masterclass on "The Impressionists" organized by the artist group Paard Verzameld. The work depicts a dynamic scene during a race at the famous Kentucky Derby.
In the foreground, galloping horses and their riders can be seen, captured in lively, rapid strokes that emphasize movement and pace. The pastel technique underscores the impressionistic character: Instead of clear contours, soft transitions, vibrant… colors, and atmospheric lighting dominate. Dust swirls beneath the hooves and dissolves into pastel tones. The horses and jockeys are not portrayed as portraits, but appear like snapshots—fleeting and full of energy.
The sketch combines the fleeting perception of a moment – in the spirit of the Impressionists – with the powerful expression of equestrian sport.
Michaela Stocker is passionate about painting horses in pastels and oils. Her techniques are experimental, the focus is on the emotional bond between humans and animals. Her works of art radiate a deep connection and an almost tangible admiration for nature.
