About this artwork
Naudy is a little farm north of the Lot in rural France. We arrived there on enightin early June when it was raining. The next morning I went out into the meadow next to the farmhouse and marvelled at all the orchids. The next morning I went and got a sketch pad but the farmer was mowing the field. When he had finished I sat down to see if i could draw the hay bales and clouds as a single line drawing. Then last year, looking back through my sketchbook…
I thought I could make a painting which was not based solely on line. I was painting landscapes at the time so I wanted to find a way of expressing the furrows left in fields. The undulations of the field are expressed by discontinuities in the stubble lines.
