About this artwork
This title is grammatically accurate even though most of the world will know that the 'fish' in 'fish and chips' is usually deep fried in batter and forms the dubious zenith of British cuisine, along with Shepherds Pie and Chicken Tikka Massala. But fish and chips is not a British invention. It was imported into the UK by Portuguese and Spanish immigrants - who had also spent time in the Netherlands - in the 1800s. This artist was reluctant to raise… a calorific lump of deep fried battered cod into high art and chose to replace it instead with a couple of mackerel fillets due to his ludicrous veneration of the artistic patterns on a mackerel's back. These 'fingerprints' on a mackerel's back were assumed to be some sort of camouflage mechanism but in reality they turn out to be sophisticated navigation marks that mackerel can follow when they are traveling in large schools. All rather interesting I am sure you will agree. And mackerel - like this painting - is also very good for you.

Steve White, a painter based in the Netherlands, has extensively exhibited his works nationally, as well as in the United Kingdom. While he appreciates that art can stir emotions and have great meaning for people, he has a more practical approach to creation. For example, one of the tests he does for his own works is simple - he asks himself, "Would this look good over someone's sofa?". White's abstract realist compositions also combine elements of minimalism.
